Michael L. Blute, M.D., Emeritus Chair of the Department of Urology at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN (1999-2006).  Dr Blute became professor of Urology in 1997 and Dr. Anson L. Clark, Professor of Urology, Mayo Medical College in 2000.  He was appointed to the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Executive Board in 2005. 

 

Throughout his career, Dr. Blute has funded by the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the American Cancer Society, Inc.

 

He was the principal investigator for the first transurethral microwave thermotherapy device for benign prostatic hyperplasia approved by the FDA.   He has developed and managed major dynamic prostate, kidney and bladder cancer data registries at Mayo Clinic which has resulted in numerous publications of predictive nomograms, biomarker discoveries and therapeutic targets for these diseases. 

 

He has served the American Urologic Association in the following capacities: health policy counsel, AUA health policy survey and research committee 1997-2000, North Central Section AUA health policy counsel alternate member 1996-1997, Socioeconomic Committee Chair 1995-1996, the Technology Assessment Council, AUA New Technology and Treatment Advisory Committee 1996-1998, the AUA Practice Guidelines and Standards Committee Panel 1996-1999; and currently serves in the Renal Mass AUA Practice Guidelines Committee as a panel member, American Joint Committee on Cancer liaison 2001-2003. 

 

 

Dr Zimmern, MD is currently a Professor of Urology at the University Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and the Director of the Bladder and Incontinence Treatment Center and is the Past President of the Society for Female Urology and Urodynamics (SUFU). Dr Zimmern received his medical training and completed his doctoral thesis at the Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris, France.

 

Dr Zimmern’s clinical interests include female Urology (incontinence, prolapse), voiding dysfunction, urodynamics and neurourology. His research has focused on incontinence, prolapse and voiding dysfunction

 

Dr. Zimmern assumes journalistic responsibility for several journals of urology in France and the United States. He has co-authored over 160 publications, 40 book chapters, and 10 films on female urology reconstructive procedures related to the management of incontinence and vaginal prolapses. He has also edited a textbook on Female Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery (2003) with Professor Chris Stanton, a textbook on Multidisciplinary Management of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders (2006) with Drs. Chapple, Brubaker, Smith, and Bo, and a third textbook Vaginal Surgery for Incontinence and Prolapse with Drs. Norton, Haab and Chapple.

 

 

Professor Joel Sheinfeld is Deputy Chief of the Urology Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City.  He is Professor of Urology at the Weill College of Medicine Cornell University and Adjunct Professor of Urology at the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine.

 

Professor Sheinfeld received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Cornell University and medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine.  Professor Sheinfeld completed his urology residency at the University of Rochester Medical School and Urologic Oncology Fellowship at MSKCC.  Upon completion of his fellowship, he joined the staff at MSKCC and became Director of the Urology Fellowship Program in 1994.  He served as Vice-Chairman of the Department of Urology at MSKCC from 2002-2006, and is currently Deputy Chief of Urology. 

 

Professor Sheinfeld serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including as new Associate Editor for Oncology for Urology.  His clinical work has been recognized by being named to “Best Doctors in America” and New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors” list for several years.  In addition to numerous visiting professorships, Professor Sheinfeld has been the recipient of the Faculty Recognition Award from Downstate Medical Center and Clinical Research Prize from the American Urological Association.

 

Professor Sheinfeld has published over 125 articles, edited several journals, and written 15 book chapters.  His clinical interest in Urologic Oncology has focused primarily on the biology and clinical management of testicular cancer.

Professor Studer is the Chairman of the Department of Urology and Professor of Urology at the University of Bern (Switzerland). He received his medical degree at the Universities of Bern and Bordeaux (France) and completed his residency in Lausanne, Geneva, Lucerne and Bern. For one year he stayed as a research fellow and visiting Assistant Professor at the Division of Urology, University of California, Los Angeles.

 

His special fields of clinical research are the cancer of the prostate and the bladder, as well as orthotopic bladder substitution after cystectomy. His specialities in surgery are the pelvic lymph node dissection, the nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, nerve-sparing radical cystectomy and the ileal orthotopic low pressure bladder substitute.

 

He is an active teacher for medical students as well as for senior physicians. He presents the results of his research work at international meetings, usually as an invited guest lecturer. He also gives regularly teaching courses at EAU and AUA. As a visiting Professor he does live surgeries and oral presentations in many countries. Professor Studer is a well-known author and reviewer in the peer-reviewed literature.

 

 

Mark A. Moyad, MD, MPH, occupies an endowed position created and funded entirely by his patients.  He is the Jenkins/Pokempner Director of Preventive & Alternative Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center (Department of Urology).  Mark received his Masters in Public Health degree from the University of South Florida (Tampa, Florida) with a focus on environmental health/epidemiology.

 

He is the primary author of over 100 medical articles and he is the editor-in-chief of the medical journal “Seminars in Preventive & Alternative Medicine” by Elsevier.  He is an editor and reviewer for at least 10 medical journals and the editor-in-chief of the new Humana Medical Book Series on Preventive & Alternative Medicine. 

 

Dr Moyad is the course director or co-director for the annual AUA (American Urological Society), ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) and SUNA (Society of Urologic Nurses Association) class on Preventive and Alternative Medicine.  He is the co-author or author of 7 books and has also maintained a consulting practice in Preventive and Alternative Medicine for the last 15 years. He has lectured on breast, prostate and a variety of other cancers in addition to cardiovascular disease and maternal and child health prevention internationally in almost every country and in all 50 US states and at every major academic institution. 

 

 

Julian Burnside is a barrister who is based in Melbourne.  Julian joined the Bar in 1976 and took silk in 1989.  He acted for the Ok Tedi natives against BHP, for Alan Bond in fraud trials, for Rose Porteous in numerous actions against Gina Rinehart, and for the Maritime Union of Australia in the 1998 waterfront dispute against Patrick Stevedores. Julian was also the Senior Counsel assisting the Australian Broadcasting Authority in the “Cash for Comment” inquiry and was Senior Counsel for Liberty Victoria in the Tampa litigation.

 

Julian is President of Liberty Victoria, and has acted pro bono in many human rights cases, in particular concerning the treatment of refugees.  He is Chair of Fortyfive Downstairs and Chair of the Mietta Foundation.  

 

Julian has also written a number of books including a book of letters written by asylum seekers held in Australia’s detention camps.  The book, From Nothing to Zero was published in 2003 by Lonely Planet. His latest book Watching Brief, a collection of essays about the justice system and human rights, was  published in November 2007.

L. Dean Knoll, MD, is the Medical Director for both the Center for Urological Treatment and Medical Research Associates of Nashville in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr Knoll received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences, Chicago Medical School, North Chicago, Illinois. He completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in urology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

A frequent contributor to the medical press, Dr Knoll has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters. He has delivered numerous lectures and operated both nationally and internationally.

Dr Knoll has been a principle investigator in over 110 basic science and clinical trials of new devices and pharmacotherapies for various urological diseases including new devices and pharmacotherapies for the diagnosis and treatment of male erectile dysfunction, male and female urinary incontinence and benign prostate hypertrophy.

Dr Knoll is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomat of the American Board of Urology. He is also a member of numerous international and national medical organizations including the American Urologic Association, the International Society of Impotence Research and the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.
 

 

Dr Richard Gaston is the Chief of Clinic in Urology at the Hospital of Bordeaux and the Director of the Department of Urology at the Oncological Institute of Bordeaux. Dr Gaston is a pioneer and expert in uro-laparoscopy at IRCAD and was the first performer of radical prostatectomy in Europe in 1997. Dr Gaston is also an accomplished writer of data concerning uro-laparoscopy and has performed numerous live surgeries in laparoscopy at many a congresses. Furthermore, Dr Gaston is one of the most experienced Surgeons in prostatectomy by laparoscopic approach in the world.

Anne Storey is a clinical nurse specialist in Urology and works in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals in the UK. Anne has been in Nursing for 25 years and 18 of those have been spent in Urology, specialising in Prostate Assessment, Penile Cancer, Andrology and Research. Anne is involved in the British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) and is the Chairwoman of the subspecialty of Andrology, having presented at their annual conference in February 2008.

 

In 2002, Anne had a 12 month career break and travelled through the USA, Canada, Fiji and Australia. Upon arrival in Sydney, Anne spent time working in the Operating Theatres at the North Sydney Hospital.

 

Anne enjoys travelling, but also loves the UK, especially Yorkshire. Her favourite leisure pursuits are rock music, food and wine, reading, walking and when she gets the chance, sailing. Anne hates the gym and tripe in equal measures.

 

 

Fran Lee trained at Fremantle  Hospital  (Freo) and went on to do midwifery, where she thought she would stay. However, whilst raising children she worked in aged care and really enjoyed it. Needing a change in direction, Fran enrolled at university where she completed a Bachelor of Health Science Nursing. It was serendipity that led Fran to the Henry Hospital – aged care rehab where she completed a Continence Adviser course and became a Clinical Nurse Consultant Continence. Fran loved this job and worked in the area for 14 years in a variety of settings, during which time she also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Stomaltherapy.

 

Since commencing at Fremantle Hospital in 1996 Fran's focus has changed from Continence to Urology. This resulted in her attending university for studies once more where she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Specialisation to become a Nurse Practitioner. Fran was designated in August 2007 – the first Nurse Practitioner at Fremantle and the first Urology Nurse Practitioner in the state.

 

After working as a Division 1 Nurse for 20 years in rural hospitals Peter Strange became interested in community focused care and completed a Graduate Certificate in Public and Community Health at LaTrobe University Bendigo. In 2007, Peter completed his Masters of Nursing Science (Nurse Practitioner) at the University of South Australia.

 

Peter is currently employed by Bendigo Community Health Services in the division of Health Promotion as Nurse Practitioner (Men’s Health). He works with men on a clinical basis firstly through the Men’s Health Clinic and secondly through a Mobile Men’s Clinic which engages men in the work place and in isolated rural communities. Health promotion and education form a major part of his work and involves speaking engagements in a variety of settings in the local community.
